Serenity: The Balance of Control & Release
We hear some variation of the phrase “control your controllables” all the time. Having experienced the chaos of the world over the last 35 years and the constant ebbs and flows of my personal and professional life, it makes sense to me that we feel the need to control everything in our grasp. But how do we know when it’s time to grab control and when it’s time to loosen our grip?

Signs we’re grasping too tight.
We’re reaching for a sense of control over things we just don’t have. We are too worried about what will happen once we’re on the road—commonly this is considered the fear of the unknown. As such, we are highly sensitive and highly reactive to anticipated external factors. Every decision, every argument, every avoidance is about something we believe might happen. We are incredibly overprotective of ourselves, so we are always tense and on the lookout for danger.
We have low confidence because we simply can’t relax in the unknown. Instead of making decisions from a place of peace and safety, everything comes from an insecure place to avoid the threat of danger.
Signs we’re not grasping tight enough
I know there have been times in my life when I avoided going to the mechanic because I was afraid of the price tag associated with whatever laundry list of work they would say needs doing. I’ve driven with brakes squeaking, a tank right on that empty line, and about 4,000 miles beyond my suggested oil change (this is me, adulting is hard!). I start the car with a prayer, sweat bullets while desperately searching my GPS for the nearest gas station, and wish upon all the stars for green lights.
Well, that’s sometimes how we go about living our lives. We avoid all the things we know we need to do for a variety of reasons: time, money, laziness, fear, or simple distraction. All the while, we know we have been neglecting these responsibilities and are painfully aware of the potential consequences hiding behind the next corner.
All the while, we know we have been neglecting these responsibilities and are painfully aware of the potential consequences hiding behind the next corner. That, combined with all of the unknowns, creates an increased level of anxiety because we both know and don’t know the potential danger ahead!
We can’t enjoy the drive, the music, or the breeze from the window, let alone the journey of life, because we know that we have not taken control of our basic responsibilities in order to travel safely.
So, where’s the balance?
First, prepare, prepare, prepare. Do the work, no matter how tedious (or annoying, or expensive), to ensure you have taken care of yourself and prepared yourself for your journey of life. Get to know yourself, understand your triggers, head to a doctor (and a therapist) for a check-up, get language for your feelings and educate yourself. In short: take care of your body, mind, and spirit.
The second answer is more difficult, but it is at the root of most anxiety: find stillness in the chaos of life so that you can know peace.
You are bound to be disappointed! Not getting the job, the business or relationship failing, shame, embarrassment: they all feel like failure because in some ways they are. They are the failure of an outcome you expected or hoped for, but they are not the failure of you.
You have been given the gift of resilience; you just have to trust that you have it and activate it when you need it. Doing our best without any certainty that it will be enough is an act of courage that can create a sense of peace if we let it. It’s up to you to release yourself from the need to control the outcome, so you can enjoy the journey.
